What Is It Really Like to Volunteer at PERTAPIS?

Ask most people what volunteering looks like, and they might picture a few hours spent sorting donations, helping at an event or interacting with beneficiaries before returning to their usual routines.

At PERTAPIS, that may be where volunteering begins, but it does not always end there.

At the heart of what we do is Rahmah, compassion in action. For us, volunteering is not simply about giving your time or completing a one-off activity. It is about building meaningful connections, offering support and being part of a community that believes everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and move forward.

So, What Does a Volunteer Actually Do?

There is no one-size-fits-all volunteering experience at PERTAPIS. Depending on your interests, skills and availability, there are different ways you can contribute. Volunteering opportunities at PERTAPIS include befriending seniors, mentoring children and youths, supporting community events and other community outreach activities.

Some volunteers support our food distribution efforts by packing and delivering essential items to families in the community. Others lend their time to educational activities, including homework and tuition support for children and youths. For those who enjoy spending time with seniors, volunteering can be as simple and as meaningful as having a conversation, playing a game or leading an activity.

What does volunteering actually feel like?

For many volunteers, the experience goes beyond simply giving their time. One volunteer shared that while they initially volunteered with PERTAPIS because they wanted to give back to the community, they did not expect to form such meaningful connections with the people they met. Over time, familiar faces became familiar friends, and each visit gave them another opportunity to reconnect.

Seeing beneficiaries remember them and look forward to their return became one of the reasons they continued volunteering. These moments can change the way volunteers see the people and communities around them.

Our volunteers bring their skills, knowledge, energy and experiences to the communities we serve. 

Whether they are supporting a child with their studies, spending time with a senior or contributing their professional expertise, their involvement can create opportunities for our beneficiaries to learn and connect.

At the same time, volunteers often gain something in return. New perspectives, meaningful relationships and a deeper understanding of the people and communities around them. It is this exchange that makes volunteering more than simply giving your time.
